LA Clipper: Baron Davis

"my oh my" as Ralph Lowler would say...this is big news for Clippers nation today as B Diddy reaches verbal agreement with the clips.

Came across this song by a clipper fan, basically sums it up for me

Windows Mobile 6.1 for Dash

I've been following the news regarding the new Windows Mobile 6.1 update and it's got some nice features.  Although there's no official word from T-Mobile whether this update will be provided to Dash users, it's probably a matter of time given they did give the free upgrade from WM5 to WM6 back in May last year.  But I was a little curious since it seems like other Windows Mobile phones were getting on this new version already and just thought I'll do some research.  And what do you know...there's homebrew ROMs for the dash with WM 6.1!

I loaded the latest kavana ROM I got from xda developer and so far so good.  I got my Jawbone to work straight out but I have yet to test out Internet Sharing.  There were some key mapping issues, but with some research I got the key mappings working for the US.

I really enjoy the new UI:  Looks much better, and WAY more responsive.  But the biggest feature of all for me, has got to be the return of the threaded SMS conversations for me.  This is the biggest feature I miss from my Palm Treo, and although there were 3rd party apps that did this on the Windows Mobile platform, they seem to never get it just right.  Well, this is a built-in feature in WM 6.1, and it works beautifully.

Some more noteworthy changes -

  • Home page UI - easy access to information.  Check out the deets.
  • There are built-in settings for the JOGGR strip, so no more registry hacking for this :)
  • The homebrew ROM actually came with a alarm and notepad app that works!
  • Office Mobile - create word, excel, powerpoints on your phone!  Not sure when I would need this, but it's there...

NBA: Heat gets another chance at Hawks

I've never seen this happen before, that a NBA game gets a do-over.  It will also be one of the shortest game played: 51.9 seconds.  So apparently, Shaq was incorrectly charged with a foul in a game against the Hawks, which resulted in his DQ with 6 fouls with 51.9 seconds left in overtime.  The Heat filed this complaint and commish David Stern actually agreed that it was unfair.  So the Hawks and Heat will get to play that 51.9 seconds again right before the next game they play.  Lucky for whoever's got tickets to the next game...you get an additional 51.9 seconds of NBA action to watch.

OutSync: Cool App for Facebook and OutLook users

The app I'm going to talk about is called OutSync.  This benefits those of you who use Outlook for your emails.  The app utilizes the Facebook API to sync photos with your Outlook contacts.  It matches your Facebook "Friends" with your Outlook "contacts" and updates the contact picture.  Extra mileage if you have a Windows Mobile 6 device with Exchange 2007, it gets the contacts pictures on your Windows Mobile device.  Pretty nifty.

P.S.  Just joined Facebook last month and I gotta say it's extremely addictive...

Which Transformer are you?

Take the quiz! I'm 60% Optimus Prime!  Here's the analysis:

Optimus Prime is the heroic leader of the Autobots. He is the personification of courage, strength, and integrity. His personal motto is that “Freedom is the right of all sentient beings.”

Like Optimus Prime, you are good by nature. But beware because mischievous thoughts sometimes tempt you. You are inspiring, confident, and a natural leader. The Autobots have chosen well. In addition, you enjoy being one step ahead of your friends as far as trends and technology.

Gmail Hacks with Firefox

I'm always looking for ways to make Gmail easier for me to use.  Found a couple of hacks for it and I think some of you would like this too!  These hacks require Firefox as they are add-ons and scripts.  Sorry, no love for IE users.

Better Gmail

This is a pretty popular Firefox extension, so pardon me if I'm sharing old news.  This is a script that Gina Trapani of Lifehacker compiled in 1 single install for all us Gmail fans.  My favorite hacks from Better Gmail:

  • "Integrate Google Reader":  This is actually how I ended up stumping upon this script, because I was looking for ways to integrate Google Reader.
  • "Macros keyboard shortcuts":  I love using the keyboard, especially when it comes to Gmail.  Enabling this script takes it to the next level.  You can navigate to your labels with just a few strokes!  I've reorganized and renamed my labels since then for easier keyboard navigation.  This is hands down my favorite hack.
  • "Skins":  Not that I don't like the default Gmail appearance, but sometimes a different skin is just fun.  There's a few that's included and my favorite one is "Air Skin."
  • "Hide Spam Count": This is also a good one to have because it makes you forget about that nasty spam folder.

Customize Google

CustomizeGoogle provides hack around the entire Google experience (i.e. Google Search, Google Calendar, GMail, etc).  Pretty cool options in there to check out.  In terms of the Gmail hacks, some of it overlaps with Better Gmail and I would recommend Better Gmail if you had to choose one.  The one hack I like about CustomizeGoogle is you can remove the ads that come on the side of most Google apps including search and Gmail!

Enjoy and happy hacking!

Joost: TV on the Internet

Heard of Joost yet?  Joost recently has been making headlines, scouring up $45 mil in funding.  Luckily, I was able to get myself a beta invite and took Joost for a test drive.  The UI is very refreshing and takes advantage of the internet in bringing in interactivity while watching programs or channel surfing.  The only thing is the app runs full screen by default so it really demands all of your attention, which is a very hard thing to do for me when I'm on the computer.  However, the selection of programs is quite good in my opinion (MTV, Comedy Central, Spike, National Geographic, some Anime channels, and tons of others I have yet to check out) and based on the latest headlines it would only get better.

Vista, wow.

I took the plunge two weekends ago and installed Vista Ultimate last week on my work laptop and I'm here to report everything is running smooothly.  I'm probably late to the party, but I know for a fact there's a lot more of you running XP aka eXPired :P

I know the Vista wow commercials are pretty lame, but with about a week's use of the new OS, I got wow'd (or wa-wa-wee-wa).  I'm not going to go into a lot of details regarding the features but just like to point out a couple things that stood out that I think most folks would appreciate:

  1. Aero/Glass - glass/transparency effect in your windows, nice animated effects when minimizing/maximizing.
  2. Sidebar - it's fun for now, but I'll have to see if I get sick of it.
  3. Flip 3D - basically a 3D version of alt+tab.  Pretty cool to play with.  It doesn't replace alt+tab , you access it via WinKey+Tab.
  4. DreamScene - available as a free add-on with the Ultimate edition of Vista.  This is a pretty fun feature.  I was able to find some free and cool "Dreams" from http://www.wincustomize.com/ but to run .Dream files from the site you need to install their DeskScapes software.  It's available for free.
  5. Texas Hold 'Em - available as a free add-on with the Ultimate edition of Vista.
  6. ReadyBoost - boost performance using a flash drive or SD card as cache.  One caveat is your SD card needs to pass a speed test.  Currently I use my Patriot 2GB card when I'm not using my Sanyo C6.
  7. Version control - Vista stores shadow copies of files based on system restore points.  Finally version control is built within the OS!

New Basketball Uniforms from Nike

Wow, what a change.  Check out the new uniforms Nike designed for elite college basketball teams this year over here.  It's a little over the top for me.  Does this mean tight clothing is IN for ballaz? hahah.  What do you think about them?

Map Software for Windows Mobile

I've just downloaded Google Maps for Windows Mobile and so far it's good.  This is way better than the J2ME version.  Haven't played around with it long enough to see how it compares with Windows Live Search for Mobile.  Just in case you don't have either, here are links to both.

How the customer explained it

Year in Review from your Flickr Photos

Gina Trapani from the lifehacker:

If you use photo-sharing site Flickr as your photographic memory or if it's just your impromptu photo journal, you'll love the archives calendar view.

Just add date-taken-calendar/ to the end of your photostream URL (ie, http://flickr.com/photos/lifehacker/date-taken-calendar/) and view your photos embedded right into a monthly calendar, for a nice way to see a quick birds-eye view of '06 in pictures. — Gina Trapani

Pretty cool feature.  I really like photo sites that provide chronological views, such as Picasa as well as Buzznet.  It really helps to see at a glance what was going on in my life at that moment of time.
